New SANITAS vacancy: 5 month grant for Early Stage Researcher at ICRA http://localhost:8888/sanitas-html/new-sanitas-vacancy-5-month-grant-at-for-early-stage-researcher-at-icra/ http://localhost:8888/sanitas-html/new-sanitas-vacancy-5-month-grant-at-for-early-stage-researcher-at-icra/#respond Mon, 02 Feb 2015 11:28:20 +0000 http://localhost:8888/sanitas-html/?p=1455 SANITAS invites applications for a full-time research position at the Catalan Institute for Water Research (ICRA), Girona, Spain. The selected researcher is expected to undertake mobility in order to implement an Individual Research Project (IRP) and to participate in a sustained training programme.

Deadline for applications: February 15th 2015

Title of the IRP: Biodegradation of micropollutants.

Contract duration: 5 months

Starting date: 1st March 2015 (approx.)

Brief description of the project: The research objective is to investigate biodegradation and removal mechanisms of target micropollutants by different approaches. Despite the uncertainties on the effects of micropollutants into the environment (i.e. pharmaceuticals) and the lack of knowledge regarding their degradation and overall removal, increasingly stringent discharge limits are expected. Mechanisms and operational parameters influencing biodegradation and removal mechanisms of target micropollutants are lacking and need to be optimized.

Required background of the candidates: The applicant should have an excellent academic track record and be interested in interdisciplinary research in the topics of wastewater treatment and chemistry. Bsc. or Master in environmental sciences, environmental engineering, chemical engineering or similar will be considered. The candidate must have proven laboratory skills and experience. Previous experience on wastewater treatment plants, activated sludge system and/or micropollutants removal (preferably pharmaceutical compounds) will be valued.

According to Marie Curie ITN rules

Research and training: The project covers 100% of the training and research activities established in the Career Development Plan agreed with the fellow at the beginning of the fellowship, including participation at conferences, lab work, secondments, complementary training etc.

Eligibility criteria

  • Nationality: Nationals from any country may apply.
  • Mobility: at the time of the recruitment, the researcher must not have resided or carried out his/her main activity (work, studies, etc.), in Spain for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the date of the recruitment.
  • Early Stage Researcher: researchers who, at the time of the recruitment: 1) are in possession of a title that would allow them to embark in a PhD in Spain (i.e. a Master degree) or in the country where the degree was obtained; 2) have not yet been awarded a doctorate degree and 3) have less than 4 years (full-time equivalent) of research experience, including the research training period that
  • would entitle them to a doctorate.

Evaluation criteria

First stage:

Compliance with the eligibility criteria is fundamental (to be documented if selected for interview) and should be highlighted in the Curriculum Vitae. Candidates, who fail to reflect clearly the title that allows them to embark in a PhD, the total duration of their research experience from that point on, or the compliance with the mobility criteria, will be excluded from further evaluation.

Second Stage

  • Educational background (50 %)
  • Previous research experience, relevant to the position/IRP (30%)
  • Language skills; excellent level of English is compulsory (10%).
  • Communication skills – to be evaluated in the interview (10%)

How to apply

Applications should be sent by email sent to and should include:

  1. Application form (includes a brief research statement of on how the applicant may contribute to the research position)
  2. Curriculum Vitae (Europass format strongly recommended).
  3. 2 recommendation letters (preferable) or 2 contacts for references.

IMPORTANT: No copies of diplomas or other supporting documents are necessary at this stage. However, please note that shortlisted candidates will be required to provide copies of their degrees before the interview.

Recruitment calendar

  • Notification to candidates shortlisted for interview: third week of February 2015
  • Interviews with selected candidates[1]: third week of February 2015 (approx.)
  • Final results: third or fourth week of February 2015
  • Contract begins on: 1st March 2015 (approx.)

The event took place in Girona – 20-24 of October 2014 and brought together all the SANITAS fellows for an intensive course on Decision-making and Multicriteria for Urban Water Systems.

The event was open to very limited external participation, given logistic restrictions.

The Training Week is organized by the Universitat de Girona (UdG), LEQUIA, and hosted at the Faculty of Science, in the Montilivi Campus.
